Hughes Park Cycling

Organized by Anthony Morrow

End-of-year wrap-up
Here's how 2008 ended.

I collected contributions through 14 AUG, then after than I started missing Hughes Park pretty much through the end of the year. I did attend something like 3 or 4, but I either forgot the "DONASHUN BUKIT" or there were no contributions.

08/14 - $5.43
08/07 - $2.00
07/31 - no attend
07/24 - $2.00
07/17 - no attend

And so, 2008 ended with $72.27 in contributions.

The "CAUTION - BIKE RACE" signs were ordered and delivered in early August.
The cost for three 18"x24" reflective signs and H-stakes was $97.43.

I covered the difference between contributions and cost, $25.16, out of my own pocket.

I bring these out whenever I do Hughes, which will definitely pick up again now that the season is almost here. I've been putting my own lights on them but hope to gather more contributions so we can buy several more to really make these stand out in the middle of the intersection and along the road.
Two more weeks of contributions
Including tonight, I've missed two of the last four weeks due to busy life stuff, but here's the results of the two weeks I was at Hughes:

06/26 - $6.50
07/10 - $8.78

The tally is now $62.84.

I received quotes earlier this week from a few printers I work with about getting some "CAUTION - BIKE RACE" signs made. They'll be about $30 each and I'm going to order four. I'll post an image next time I get a chance.
Great Contributions (through 19 JUN 2008)
Everyone has been very generous is supporting Hughes Park by dropping coins and big bills into the "Donashun Bukit."

Here's the last 7 weeks donations and total:

05/08 - $00.68
05/15 - $18.01
05/22 - $00.00 (I wasn't there)
05/29 - $00.00 (I wasn't there)
06/05 - $12.25
06/12 - $06.62
06/19 - $03.50

That brings us to a total of $47.56 collected to-date.
Hughes Park, Long Beach, CA - Keep it going!
Hi, I'm Anthony Morrow.

The short story is the "Hughes Park" ride (a training criterium) been going on for almost 25 years - since around the 1984 Olympics were in Los Angeles. The ride is every Thursday night, all year round, starting at 7:30 PM and going for about 1 hour.

I've been doing Hughes Park sinceabout 1994 - that's almost 15 years! It's been a major part of mytraining for nearly all of my bicycle racing career. I can't imagine myThursday nights without it.

Asa regular participant and now the de facto loud guy who yells out etiquette at the start (it's a training ride, sothere are no rules), I decided to take up an ongoing collection toachieve two things:
  • Purchase additional cones, lights, signs, and other materials (like a broom) to make the ride safer for both cyclists and vehicles using the roads.

  • Financially back efforts to improve relations with the commercialtenants who endure and sometimes loathe our presence, such as sponsoring clean up/trash collection events for the immediate area.
Yesterday,May 01, 2008, I made the first announcement of these lofty goals and thestart of the collection. At the end of the night (another fast one), the plastic Halloween bucket I grabbed before leavingthe house was filled with three $1 bills and $3.50 in quarters.

Night 1 = $6.50 raised.

There's no obligation for anyone to contribute, but my hope is those who can will so we can keep this ride going safely for years to come. Anyone wishing to contribute can drop their donation into the bucket (or whatever receptacle I come up with) OR can make a contribution right here, online.

I'm going to keep tallying the contributions and how they're used, so watch for plenty more to come!
